Too Much of a Good Thing

“But the greatest of these is love”. 1 Corinthians 13:13

Can you ever really have too much of a good thing? Really?

I love chocolate. It is the one thing I would say I can never get enough of. I think in reality, however, if I were given all the chocolate in the world, I would begin to dislike chocolate. I might even begin to despise it. The thought of chocolate might make me physically sick.

People pray for more money. They hope to, one day, win the lottery or receive an inheritance from a wealthy relative. They want to be able to dive into a bank-vault full of silver and gold coins like Uncle Scrooge McDuck, and do a back-float on their riches... but in reality, there is only a certain amount of money that we need to make us truly happy (and I would argue even those living in “poverty” can attain true happiness without a cent to their name, case in point Mother Teresa and the Dalai Lama). If you have reached a level of income that makes you comfortable and content, anything after that can become a burden. Relatives and strangers alike begin asking for handouts. The responsibility and the burden of your wealth becomes all-consuming. Eventually your money becomes your prison instead of your palace.

Wine is a good thing, but we all know what happens when we have too much of it... Food? Same thing... Think of this, if you break your wrist, pain medication can be your only hope to get through the day, but how many people have stepped over the line from medicating for pain relief to medicating to medicate? It is too much of a good thing.

Too many pets? Animal hoarder. Too many calories? Obesity. Too much power? Too much control? Too much influence over another? All good things in their own right, in a healthy context, but in excess, they become devices of disorder, distrust and a disillusionment.

I might be wrong, but when I really think about it, there’s only one thing that, in its absolute purest form, is still a good thing when we have too much...

It seems like the only good thing you can never have too much of, is love.
